Effect of added sugar on preference and intake by sheep of hay cut in the morning versus the afternoon

چکیده
Ruminants prefer hay cut in the afternoon to hay cut in themorning, presumably because hay cut in the afternoon contains higher concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates than hay cut in the morning. We determined if adding sugars (glucose and sucrose) to ground hay would account for differences in preference and affect intake of hay. Alfalfa hay cut either in the afternoon (PM) or the following morning (AM) was used in the trials. Glucose and sucrosewere added to AM hay (AMS) to make its sugar content similar to PM hay. During the first trial, lambs received a choice of either: (1) AM and PM hay; (2) AMS and PM hay; or (3) AMS andAMhay. Lambs preferred PM to AMS or AM hay. We also studied how increasing the concentration of added sugars affected preference for hay. Lambs received a choice of AMhay andAMhaywith either 1, 2, 3, or 4% added sugar. On the first day of the trial, lambs ate similar amounts of each hay type, regardless of the amount of sugar added. By the end of the trial, lambs preferred haywith 2, 3, or 4%added sugar comparedwithAMhaywithout added sugar. During the intake trial, lambs ate similar amounts of AM, AM hay with added starch and sugar (AMSS), and PMhay. After the intake trial, a final preference trial determined that prolonged exposure www.elsevier.com/locate/applanim Applied Animal Behaviour Science 94 (2005) 245–254 * Corresponding author. Our results indicate that preference for PM hay is likely related to increased levels of sugars, such as glucose and sucrose, and that lambs learn about the post-ingestive benefits of exogenous sugars added to hay. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. Experimental treatments consisted of alfalfa harvested in the morning and dried in sun, alfalfa harvested in the afternoon and dried in sun, alfalfa harvested in the morning and dried in shadow, alfalfa harvested in...
متن کاملVariation in Ruminant Preference for Alfalfa Hays Cut at Sunup and Sundown.
Diurnal variation in the concentration of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) occurs in plants as a result of photosynthesis. Ruminants have been shown to prefer tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreber) hays cut in the afternoon but the effect of morning vs. evening cutting had not been tested in legumes. To test for diurnal variation in preference for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), we har...

The preference exhibited by animals in selecting one feed over another is important only if the preferred diet is consumed daily in larger quantities, digested to a greater extent, or both. Six alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hays were harvested in pairs at sunset (PM) and sunrise (AM) on consecutive days at three harvest dates. A previous study of these hays demonstrated differences in ruminant p...
